Dessert

Our dear friend Talia brought these little chocolately puffs of heaven to our super bowl party. They were so good, maybe they helped align the stars so the Steelers could win their 6th “world championship of the world” (A’s designation)? We were obsessed - between the two of us, A and I probably ate about 20 of these things during the game. Ever since, A has frequently asked me if I’d gotten the recipe from Talia, and could I maybe try them out “for the blog”? I was surprised when she told me how easy they were to make: just a blend of crushed oreos and cream cheese, dipped in chocolate. So, if you need an even easier-to-consume and possibly-even-more-addicting way to consume oreo cookies, try this recipe immediately if not sooner. I know I’ll be making them for every Steelers game next season at least.

Grocery list: 1 package of oreos, 1 8-ounce package of cream cheese, 1 12-ounce package of chocolate pieces (or half of each package if you’re “dieting” like us and only want a half batch of oreo puffs!)

That’s all it takes. Seriously.

Pulverize the oreos to small crumbs - either in a food processor or in a ziploc bag with a rolling pin.

It took a minute or so of pulsing the oreos to get them to a dirt-like consistency. (This reminds me of the dirt pies we used to make in elementary school, where we decorated the “dirt” - crushed oreos and chocolate pudding - with gummy worms…!)

Whip the cream cheese in a stand mixer, with the beater blade attachment. Mix it on medium speed until it’s light and creamy.

Add the oreo crumbs to the cream cheese.

Mix together on medium-low speed until it has an even consistency with no streaks of white left.

Use your hands to roll out 1-inch balls of chocolate cream cheese mixture (about a tablespoon or so of the mixture per ball I guess?). Set the puffs on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Set the cookie sheet in the fridge so the puffs will harden a little bit before you dip them in hot melted chocolate - about 30 minutes should do the trick.

Dump the chocolate pieces into a microwave-safe bowl.

Heat for 1 minute, then stir with a spatula. Continue to heat in 30 second increments, stirring in between, until melted and completely smooth.

Take the puffs out of the fridge, and stab each one with a toothpick. Holding the puff by the toothpick, dunk them in the melted chocolate (use the spatula to spread the chocolate around if you need to).

Set the puffs back on the wax paper, and when they’re all covered in chocolate, put the sheet back in the fridge so the chocolate will harden.

Next, try and speed up time. Use your brain to will the refrigerator to cool the oreo puffs even faster. Seriously. Hurry up. When you take a bite, you will probably get emotional, and that’s okay. It only means you’re human. Thanks Talia!

Mom calls these “sex in your mouth,” and I still don’t think that does them justice!

Mmmmm…these are actually “orgasmic” and are so simple to make. Great for substitute chocolate birthday cake. Try stirring in a 1/2 pkg of coconut to the oreo/cream cheese mixture. Happy Birthday, Gramma…

  3. Gramma Says:

They are both right. Best birthday cake ever! Just shared blog site with some friends after telling them about these. Love you…Gramma
