KT in the kitchen.

Welcome to A Hungry Bear! I’m Katie (phonetically, that’s KT), and I started this blog as a way to share my favorite recipes with friends and family. When I’m not blogging about food (or cooking, or planning meals, or reading about food), I’m a marketer for a software company. To share a little more about me and why I started AHB, I made up a few questions I thought readers might ask.

Why did you start a food blog?

Believe it or not, when I started AHB, I wasn’t aware that food blogs existed. I just knew that I was spending too much time writing up my favorite recipes in email form to send to family and friends - so I figured a blog would be easier.

Who is the hungry bear anyway?

“Bear” is actually my nickname for my boyfriend, also known as “A”. We love to eat, and fortunately for us both, he’ll eat just about anything that I cook. He’s a pretty big guy (hence the nickname), and due to his workout schedule he eats about twice as many calories as a normal adult. It’s a good arrangement for us both.

What is AHB all about?

I’m not a professional or aspiring cook, food photographer or writer.  I just love cooking, and especially sharing food with others.  As I’ve become more exposed to the great food blogs out there, I’ve started to try and improve my photos and the usability of this blog as a recipe box.

What kinds of things do you cook?

I like wholesome, natural, healthy foods, but most importantly, the meals that I prepare need to be filling.  In my case, I’m only cooking for 2 (we eat for at least 4-6), but I think this is applicable to a lot of people.  If you’re going to go through all the effort, it better feed the family, the dinner party, or make some freezable leftovers for weeknights.

What do you mean by healthy?

It certainly doesn’t mean low-carb, low-fat, or low-calorie.  I tend to prefer minimally processed foods, meaning sometimes organic, mostly regional, in-season produce, and chemical-free meats.  It’s an ongoing challenge that has turned into a bit of an obsession: if it can be packaged in a can, plastic bag or a box, can I make it myself?

Do you always buy organic?

It’s important to me to just try to know what’s in my food, and where it comes from.  It’s not always cheaper, but I feel better about what I’m eating.  With the exception of double-stuff oreos of course.
