KT in the kitchen.

KT in the kitchen.

Welcome to A Hungry Bear! I’m Katie (phonetically, that’s KT), and I started this blog as a way to share my favorite recipes with friends and family. When I’m not blogging about food (or cooking, or planning meals, or reading about food), I’m working for a software start-up, running, swimming, or staying busy doing just about anything outdoors.

Why did you start a food blog?

When I started AHB, I wasn’t aware that food blogs existed. I just knew that I was spending too much time writing up my favorite recipes in email form to send to family and friends - so I figured a blog would be easier.

Who is the hungry bear anyway?

“Bear” actually came from a nickname for an old boyfriend, who used to eat more than an average family.  Now, I think it just generally means someone with a big appetite.  (After moving to San Francisco, I learned there’s a whole other meaning for the word, but it has absolutely nothing to do with this site.  Promise.)

What is AHB all about?

I’m not a professional or aspiring cook, food photographer or writer.  I just love cooking, and especially sharing food with others.  As I’ve become more exposed to the great food blogs out there, I’ve started to try and improve my photos and the usability of this blog as a recipe box.

What kinds of things do you cook?

I like wholesome, natural, healthy foods, but most importantly, the meals that I prepare need to be filling.  In my case, I’m always cooking for my friends, usually 4-6 (or more) servings at a time.  If you’re going to go through all the effort, it better feed the family, the dinner party, or make some freezable leftovers for weeknights.

What do you mean by healthy?

It certainly doesn’t mean low-carb, low-fat, or low-calorie.  I tend to prefer minimally processed foods, meaning mostly organic, local, in-season produce, and sustainably-produced meats and seafood.  It’s an ongoing challenge that has turned into a bit of an obsession: if it can be packaged in a can, plastic bag or a box, can I make it myself?

Do you always buy organic?

It’s important to me to just try to know what’s in my food, and where it comes from.  It’s not always cheaper, but I feel better about what I’m eating.  With the exception of double-stuff oreos of course.
